Vultures,

Turkey and Black

In Ohio it's not unusual to see vultures floating about on the air currents. Two types of vultures are common, the Turkey Vulture and the Black Vulture. Though similar in many ways, there are a few easy ways to tell them apart.

The Turkey Vulture has a distinctive,  turkey-like red head.

In flight, even if the color of the head isn't visible, the wings provide simple identification opportunities.

This Turkey Vulture has white markings that go the length of the wings, on the trailing edges.

The Black Vulture wings will be white only at the ends.

The following shots were taken on the road out of Deer Creek State Park (near Mt. Sterling, Ohio). An unfortunate possum vs. car incident was targeted by a civic-minded Turkey Vulture who figured on cleaning up the mess.

This Turkey Vulture would leave the kill when a vehicle passed by. And during one such occasion a Black Vulture decided to join in. Note the dark colored head, and the white legs - looks like tube-socks from the 70's!

I have read that these two won't share nicely, but it seemed to be a rather peaceful get together...for the vultures anyway.
